Description
Abstrahert landskap med en sjø og mennesker og trær ved bredden. I bakgrunnen ses omrisset av noe som ligner et industribygg.
Fra kunstneren: Luossa sjön, in Northern Sami Luossajávri, is a lake located in the municipality of Kiruna in Lapland. Luossajávri means Salmon Lake, (Luossa means salmon in Northern Sami and jávri means lake) from the rich trout stock, which was in the lake, important for the local community for centuries. The mining company LKAB has
gradually emptied the southern part of the lake to enable mining of the so-called lake
ore, the part of the ore body that extends below it. Today, the drained areas mostly
consist of marshlands. The remaining part of Luossajärvi’s chemical composition
shows the impact from mining operations. The lake has high levels of sulfate, nitrite
and nitride ions. The high sulfate levels indicate extensive weathering processes of
mainly carbonate and sulfide material. The copper content in the lake is also high due
to leakage from the ponds of the Viscaria mine. The grounds for the natural trout
stock have disappeared, but LKAB annually plants trout in the waters, as well as
other species of fish in the “salmon family”
